Cotopaxi remix, 2024

Frederic Edwin Church’s Cotopaxi was remixed monochromaticaly, solely focusing on light and dark gradients. Removing color made the image feel older and less dynamic, with much of the energy of the sun and volcanic eruption lost in the smoke and shadows. While the scale of the scene remained, the vividness was harder to convey, so abstraction was added to bring fire back into the piece.

Piet Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow was reinterpreted by using a split complementary color scheme. Allowing yellow the most space shifts the focus where red once dominated, while using violet-red and blue-violet in the other rectangles. To maintain contrast while altering the boundaries, black and white were swapped. While the original work felt structured and educational with its use of primary colors, this reinterpretation feels more natural in evoking the idea of day and night- seeing the sun, shadows, perhaps a pool, and violets growing.
